Best WordPress Plugins for Blogs

Sunday, May 11th, 2014 Wordpress

When setting up a WordPress blog, it is easy to get carried away installing every plugin imaginable. Not only does this slow down your website, as more code needs to be loaded (bad for SEO), but you also increase the risk of opening up your site to malicious users who can exploit shortcomings in the plugins code. This isn’t to dismay anyone from using plugins, because plugins are great and can greatly enhance your website in a few small clicks. Some of the plugins that I would recommenced are listed below.

Spam Prevention

Askimet – Possibly the best plugin to help prevent spam comments taking over your website. There are free licenses for personal sites, and paid for licenses for more than one website or for businesses. Instead of needing to review each and every comment, Askimet cleverly sends potential spam comments to the spam folder.

Security

WP-Fence

Social Media

Shareaholic – A personal favorite of mine for adding social icons to blog posts and pages. Choose from a selection of locations, sizes as well as a heading to accompany your links. Using this plugin can help encourage more readers to share your content.

Affiliates

WordPress Affiliate Link Manager

WP Auto Affiliate Links 4.0 – Easily add affiliate links to products from keywords that you setup in the back-end of your WordPress install, alternatively you can let the plugin automatically select keywords adding links from Clickbank, Shareasale or Amazon.

SEO

WordPress SEO  – This is a must-have for anyone who is serious about blogging as its functionality is second to none. One of the best parts of this plugin is that it adds an additional section to your blog creation page that allows you to select a keyword which then ranks your content, url, meta fields and images for inclusion of this keyword.

SEO Extended – This plugin builds on the functionality of Yoast’s WordPress SEO plugin (previously mentioned). It allows you to update the meta fields and titles of all your posts from one page – no need to open every page to update your SEO.

Comments

Disqus – Disqus adds an elegant commenting system to your blog, removing the distasteful default comment box. Disqus allows users to select a social network to log in from, or to simply create a username in order to use Disqus on every site that has it.
